Microdermabrasion: What to Expect During Your Surgery
Do you ever look in the mirror and wish that your face had a more even skin tone? If you answered yes, then you may want to consider microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment gently exfoliates your skin. After a series of treatments, your complexion can appear smoother, brighter, and more even in color.
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a type of skin resurfacing technique. Your dermatologist uses a device that has tiny crystals to exfoliate, or remove, a layer of dead skin cells. It can stimulate collagen production to promote new skin growth, making your skin looking smoother and younger.
Is microdermabrasion right for you?
Microdermabrasion is usually painless and can be an effective treatment. You may want to consider if you have any of the following:
Dull complexion;
Uneven or blotchy skin tone or texture;
Whiteheads or blackheads;
Fine lines or wrinkles;
Acne scars;
Sun damaged skin;
Dark pigmented spots (age spots or melasma).
Although, dermabrasion may be safe, it is not for everyone. You should not choose dermabrasion if you have deep acne, rosacea, eczema, dermatitis or sensitive skin. You should talk to your dermatologist to get a more detailed evaluation on your skin.
How is microdermabrasion performed?
Microdermabrasion is usually performed by a certified dermatologist at dermatology clinic or medical spa. There are mainly two methods used: crystal microdermabrasion and diamond-tip microdermabrasion.
Crystal Microdermabrasion
The device used for this type of microdermabrasion emits crystals onto your skin, resulting in a gentle polishing process. Then the dead skin cells along with the crystals are removed from your skin afterwards.
Diamond-Tip Microdermabrasion
This type of microdermabrasion uses a diamond-tip device that gently exfoliates dead skin cells from your skin. Like the crystal microdermabrasion, the dead skin cells are removed from your skin afterwards. The diamond-tip microdermabrasion is safer to perform closer to the eyes and has more flexibility in sensitive areas or on more sensitive skin.
Microdermabrasion may be combined with a light chemical peel to maximize effects. Immediately after your treatment, your dermatologist will apply a moisturizer with SPF to hydrate and protect your skin.
How to prepare for your treatment
Make sure to let your dermatologist know if you are taking any medications such as isotretinoin or tretinoin cream. These drugs can make your skin more sensitive. You should also let your dermatologist know if you have any skin conditions that can interfere with your treatment. This may include any open lesions, wounds or cuts.
Before your treatment, you may be asked to stop smoking at least six weeks before treatment. You may also need to stop taking certain medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs or herbal products that can prolong your bleeding time. It can also help to reduce the amount of makeup or products on your face at least one day before treatment.
Before you choose to use microdermabrasion to treat your skin condition, you should understand what happens during and how to prepare. You should talk to your dermatologist about your skin condition and see if you are a good candidate for microdermabrasion.
