Lips are also considered as a symbol of sexuality. However, not many people pay much attention to lips nor give them the needed care. There are many factors contributing to dry lips and we will get to know about 5 of them in this article.
Dehydration
Dry lips can be the result of total body dehydration. For instance, if you don’t meet the water intake recommended for a day, your lips are going to suffer. They will get chapped and dry losing their sexy looking.
Lips licking
Most people convict this crime at least once in their life without really knowing it. Some lick their lips out of old habit. Some do because they think saliva can moist their lips. For whichever reasons, don’t ever lick your lips. As lips don’t contain and can not produce a thick layer of natural oil like our skin does, they tend to become even dryer after saliva evaporates.
Sunscreen
In the summer when you go to the beach or just have a nice jog outside, it’s important to wear protection on your body and your lips as well. A normal facial sunscreen can do the job but you may want to invest in a lip balm with SPF since it has more moisturized effect.
You should wear lips protection in the winter as well. The cold and wind outside make the lips get chapped. Plus, there is not much visible sunlight but the UV rays are reported to be even stronger and cause more damages.
Medication
Certain types of drugs such as prescribed accutane, propranolol or prochlorperzazine can leave you a pair of chapped lips. Consult with your doctor about possible side effects before taking any medicines. Remember to inform them if your lips get extremely dry, flaky and start bleeding.
Vitamins
Vitamins play an important role in our lips’ well-being. Deficiency in some vitamins and excessive usage of some others can cause several visible effects on your lips.
Vitamin B-3 can retain you lips moisture while vitamin B-12 helps with the healing process. Zinc promotes cellular growth and vitamin-A assists in lips natural oil production. Therefore, remember to provide your body with good source of vitamins. Talk to your personal doctor before taking vitamin supplements since too much vitamin-A can make your lips start peeling.
Treatment
There are many solutions available to heal and protect your lips. First of all, the oldest and most traditional way is to drink a lot of water, at least 2 litters a day. Secondly, bring along and wear your SPF lip balm all the time. Next, add more vegetables to your diet to get all the nutritional goodness. Last but not least, ditch the habit of licking, biting or chewing your lips.
